The Physical Therapy Department at the University of Michigan-Flint invites candidates to apply for the full-time ranked position of Associate Director for Professional Education (ADPE). This position is a 12-month, full-time faculty position and will be 50% administrative and 50% instructional with a projected start date of January 1, 2023. Preference for this position is a tenure track associate or full professor; however a clinical track and/or assistant professor may be considered. The track and rank will be commensurate with experience and academic credentials. The primary administrative responsibilities are to serve as the Entry-level Professional DPT Program Director.   

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Operationalize the content, delivery, and assessment of the DPT curriculum working collaboratively with the Department Director, Faculty and Staff. 

  2. Demonstrate excellence in teaching expertise and commitment to the success of students inside and outside the classroom.  

  3. Develop and maintain a scholarly agenda according to the College of Health Sciences (CHS) scholarship requirements for Tenure/ Clinical Track Faculty.

  4. Provide service to the university, college, department, profession, and the community. 

Required Qualifications

  • An earned degree in physical therapy 

  • An earned academic doctorate in a relevant discipline

  • Minimum of six years of full-time higher education experience with a minimum of three years of full-time experience as a core faculty member in a CAPTE accredited entry-level physical therapist education program

  • A record of demonstrated teaching effectiveness and academic leadership 

  • Licensed or regulated in a US jurisdiction as a physical therapist and eligible for licensure in Michigan 

  • Contemporary expertise in a physical therapy content area 

  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion 

  • Demonstrated scholarly productivity

  • Commitment to shared governance

To be considered for an Associate or Full Professor level clinical or tenure-track position, the candidate’s portfolio must be reviewed in accordance with the College of Health Sciences Policy and Procedures for Faculty Tenure and/or Promotion Reviews.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or other academic doctoral degree in relevant discipline

  • Eligible for review for Clinical Associate Professor, Clinical Professor, Associate Professor with Tenure, or Professor with Tenure by College of Health Sciences Policy and Procedures for Faculty Tenure and/or Promotion Reviews.  

  • Administrative experience in higher education 

  • Peer-reviewed publication record with national recognition in their area of research and a track record that merits appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor (tenure-track).

About the DPT at UM-Flint 

The DPT program is fullyaccredited in by the CAPTE.  Faculty utilize best practices in teaching and learning including interprofessional education (IPE), high-tech media labs, simulations, and hands-on experiential labs. The department has dedicated research spaces with a 3-D movement analysis system, an instrumented gait mat, and other technology and equipment to promote faculty and student scholarship. We are committed to community engagement through service learning and a student led pro-bono clinic (HEART).

The rank and track of the selected candidate will depend upon the candidate's qualifications.The preference is to fill the position on the tenure-track at either the associate or full professor rank. However, those at the assistant professor level and/or that qualify for a clinical-track appointment will be considered.

SUMMARY:

The role of the Physical Therapist is to provide therapy services to homebound patients who have difficulty with functional activities related to mobility. Therapy will be designed and adapted for the physically and/or mentally challenged patient to promote restoration of useful function. This individual is responsible for providing physician ordered therapy and participates in the development of the physical therapy program. He/she also teaches other health care professionals, the patient/caregiver and others how to carry out the prescribed therapy activities. The Physical Therapist demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluates patients by applying diagnostic/prognostic muscle, nerve, joint and functional abilities assessments. Discusses discharge goals during treatment and provides appropriate home program of exercises/activities prior to discharge.
  • Treats patients to relieve pain, develop or restore function, and maintain performance using physical means such as exercises, muscle re-education, gait, transfer training and prosthetic training.
  • Instructs patients in care and use of equipment, such as wheelchairs, braces, crutches, canes and prosthetic/orthotic devices.
  • When appropriate, instructs other team members, including PTAs, family members and/or caregivers appropriate treatment procedures and supportive activities.
  • Delegates appropriate treatment functions to the PTA consistent with safe and legal physical therapy practice and predicated on the complexity and acuity of the patient’s needs. Makes supervisory visits at least once a month or upon the PTA’s request for a re-evaluation when a change in the treatment plan of care is needed prior to any planned discharge and in response to a change in the patient’s medical status. (Refer to the PT/PTA Supervisory Policy.)
  • Observes, records, and reports to the physician the patient’s reaction to treatment and any changes in the patient’s condition.
  • Maintains interdisciplinary communication with other disciplines via written and verbal means.
  • Completes team meeting reports including activities, patient’s response to treatment and progress toward goals.
  • Participates in inservice education, chart/peer review for quarterly audit and utilization review as requested.
  • Maintains confidentiality with all information in the appropriate manner.
  • Contributes to organization success targets for patient satisfaction and net operating margin by providing excellent customer service performance.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of physical therapy.
  • Possession of a current license to practice physical therapy in Michigan.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license.
  • At least one year of experience as a Physical Therapist.
  • Previous homecare experience preferred.
  • BLS certified or eligible.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Homecare knowledge preferred.
  • Ability to type 25 WPM.
  • Comfortable with basic computer programs and e-mail.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated.
